Director of Science - Save the Redwoods League in San Francisco (application deadline June 2010). We are looking for a knowledgeable leader in the current science of forest ecology who is able to communicate key issues to a broad audience including Save the Redwoods League's members, donors, partners, policy makers, and journalists. The Director of Science oversees all aspects of Save the Redwoods League's science programs, a primary focus of which concerns redwood forest health and restoration. Working with the Research Committee, the Director advances the scientific understanding of redwood forests and their conservation by engaging with scientists and research partners external to the League. The Director works to integrate sound redwood science into the work of the League and its conservation partners. The Director of Science is responsible for the day to day management of research initiatives, such as the League's Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative, and acts as a technical resource to League project staff advancing conservation and restoration projects. There is frequent travel predominantly within California with some weekend and evening responsibilities. Restoration and Outreach Internship - Park Stewardship Program, San Francisco. Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Final Application Filing Date April 1, 2010. Job Description The Park Stewardship San Francisco/Ocean Beach Restoration and Outreach intern works primarily with the Park Stewardship San Francisco program, and also several times a month with the Ocean Beach Volunteer program. Both of these are programs of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, a non-profit partner of the National Parks Service and the Presidio Trust. This internship will introduce the intern to all aspects of habitat restoration and park management, with a focus on volunteer program management, an integral component of most restoration projects in the Golden Gate National Parks, and other natural resource management agencies. The intern will gain valuable experience in developing and running volunteer programs that provide opportunities for youth, school groups, corporate groups and adults, and will be involved in outreach to and education of Lands End visitors and neighbors. The intern will also gain field experience managing invasive plants, out planting natives, and monitoring. Interns are compensated with $125 a week for out-of-pocket expenses and are provided housing in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We also offer transportation to work sites, a variety of training opportunities, and marketable work experience. Dunes/Wetlands Monitoring and Restoration Internship - Marin County, California. Point Reyes National Seashore. Final Application Filing Date: April 15, 2010. Primary responsibility: To assist park staff in performing monitoring and restoration tasks for the Dune Restoration project. Secondary responsibility: To assist park staff in performing monitoring and restoration tasks for the Giacomini Wetlands Restoration project and/or other park projects that entail working with vegetation, soils, and/or hydrology. Specific duties will include: helping with monitoring of resources in the Dune Restoration project area and other park locations, including vegetation monitoring and plant surveys. May involve use of GPS and GIS, so experience in those areas is a definite plus; helping with data entry of monitoring data, validation of data, and cleaning up of existing databases; helping with restoration activities, including, but not limited to, invasives removal, overseeing volunteer or contract invasive removal efforts, and oversight of other restoration-related activities. Knowledge/Skills/Experience desired include: interest in botany or plant ecology, interest in wetlands and/or restoration, ability/desire/willingness to identify plant species, ability to work outside for long periods in a range of conditions, hiking over occasionally rugged terrain. Training on specific monitoring protocols will be provided. Some plant identification skills would be helpful, although not necessarily a requirement.The intern will gain field skills in dune and rare plant ecology, monitoring, invasive plant removal, GIS/GPS, and database management in a National Park setting. The internship will take place from May-September, with a possibility to extend to beyond August; 4-5 days/week minimum (32-40 hours); 8 hour days. Minimum age is 18. The Oakland office of URS Corporation seeks a Project Restoration Ecologist to join an established Ecosystem Restoration practice with a strong track record of successful restoration projects. The Ecosystem Restoration practice is part of a large, vibrant group of more than 30 biologists including wildlife biologists, plant ecologists, wetland scientists, restoration ecologists, aquatic ecologists and fisheries biologists. Biological work in the Oakland office includes a variety of large and small projects throughout California that include baseline environmental studies, restoration planning and implementation, impact evaluations, and project permitting. Executive Director - for the Yolo County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications through March 20, 1020. Stewardship Associate - Rolling Hills Estates/Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Accepting applications through March 15, 2010. The Stewardship Associate provides support for the management of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy's (PVPLC) managed properties, outdoor volunteer days, biological monitoring, community outreach, and associated record keeping. This full time position reports to the Conservation Director. Responsibilities: Independently organize and lead the Stewardship Department's outdoor volunteer programs, including Saturday volunteer events, assist in annual conservation easement monitoring, conduct GPS and GIS mapping projects, oversee as needed trails rehabilitation projects with volunteers and/or independent contractors, educate, instruct and oversee interns and volunteers, maintain accurate office records/computer files relating to his/her position, assist the Conservation Director and other staff on annual monitoring and reporting, work cooperatively with, and maintain good communications with, other staff and Board members, assist with functions and events as needed, conduct other tasks and special duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in natural resource management, plant or wildlife ecology, or related field. Graduate work/degree preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as a team member with strong organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated experience creating maps and managing data with the current generation of ArcGIS software products and statistical software. Familiarity with California flora and fauna, coastal sage scrub ecosystems, and restoration ecology is desirable. General knowledge, or willingness to learn, about trail construction and design. Ability to walk up to several miles per day over rough terrain in year round conditions. Preserve Manager – Riverside and Orange Counties, California . Center for Natural Lands Management (www.cnlm.org). Final Application Filing Date: Open until filled. The Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) is a nonprofit 501(3)(c), organization created in 1990 whose mission is the perpetual stewardship of conservation lands, sensitive species, and their habitats. The Preserve Manager – Riverside/Orange Counties will be responsible for several CNLM Preserves. The Preserves represent a variety of habitats but are primarily grasslands, riparian wetlands, and coastal sage scrub habitat. All CNLM Preserves have sensitive or federally or State-listed species. Within this portfolio, those species include the California gnatcatcher and Stephen's kangaroo rat. Three ‘anchor’ preserves for which this position is responsible are the Mockingbird Canyon, March Stephen's Kangaroo Rat, and Coyote Hills East Preserves. The Preserve Manager – Riverside/Orange Counties will provide resource management in accordance with the conservation values and regulatory requirements of each Preserve. Preserves are managed as individual entities with site-specific plans, reports, and budgets.
