Senior Biologist - Riverside, CA. Invasive Plant Early Detection Internship - San Francisco Bay Area, Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Final Filing Date: Open Until Filled.  The National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Program is charged with “improving natural resource management through greater reliance on scientific knowledge.” Invasive species are one of the top priorities for monitoring in our national parks, and early detection of new plant species is a key focus for the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN) of national parks.  Discovering weeds before they become well-established is critical to reducing damage to ecosystem integrity, preventing the loss of habitat for rare plants and animals, and preventing costly natural resource management.  The SFAN has established an invasive species early detection program to create a priority list of plants with documented invasive potential that occur at low densities, and to institute a system for patrolling trails, roadsides, and waterways for these priority weeds.  Trained volunteers will be an integral component of this priority weed search effort.  As a Weed Watcher you will learn to identify invasive plants of the region, and how to map and report your findings.  Interns will be trained in progressively more complex weed identification and data collection.  Deepen your understanding of the natural world while playing an important role in the protection of the unique resources at the park.  Description of Duties: Participate in invasive plant identification and data collection training. Assist park staff in trail and roadside invasive plant monitoring and mapping. Follow guidelines in making safety a priority; responsible for use of personal protective gear and insuring that all tools, equipment, vehicles and other co-workers are working safely in all related conditions. Knowledge/Skills Desired:  Knowledge of San Francisco Bay region flora, and/or willingness to learn. Knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and/or willingness to learn. Ecological Restoration Intern - San Francisco, CA. Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Final Filing Date: Open until filled. The Site Stewardship Program, part of the non-profit Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, is seeking a motivated intern (6 mos. - 1 year) to work in a dynamic community-based habitat restoration program. Site Stewardship is a small office, with 4 permanent employees and 4 to 6 full-time interns. We provide care and restoration of sensitive lands and species within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area with the support of local volunteers and education groups. Work sites are in a variety of coastal habitats north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge and support three endangered species. Duties: 1) help prioritize and plan habitat restoration projects and volunteer workdays, 2) conduct on-the-ground habitat restoration including invasive species control, fence construction, and revegetation 3) engage local community by leading interpretive hikes, posting interpretive materials, and corresponding with volunteers, 4) monitor restoration progress; collect, enter, and manage ecological data, 5) help prepare summary reports and revise management plans and 6) maintain tools and equipment and other miscellaneous duties. Minimum Qualifications: a love of nature, plants, and enthusiasm for outdoor work and getting hands dirty; a strong interest in ecological restoration and endangered species management; ability to work well within a team; ability to take on responsibility, work independently, and assume a leadership role when needed; great verbal and written communication skills; basic computer literacy, Microsoft word and Excel. Estuarine Science Fellowships - The CALFED Science Program is accepting applications from qualified individuals to compete for fellowship opportunities in 2008. California Sea Grant will administer and manage the fellowship program on behalf of the Science Program. Up to 12 fellowships are available in estuarine and riverine science for qualified predoctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The fellowships will begin September 2008. The application deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2008. The stipend for postdoctoral researchers is $45,000/yr. for up to 2 years, plus eligible expenses up to $30,000. Graduate fellows will receive $25,000/yr. for up to 2 years, plus up to $19,500 for eligible expenses (research supplies/equipment and travel necessary to carry out the proposed research and attend scientific meetings). The selected fellows and their research will focus on the San Francisco Bay-Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system and one of these topics:

1. Trends and Patterns of Habitats, Populations and System Response to a Changing Environment
2. Aquatic Invasive (Exotic) Species

The CALFED Bay-Delta Program is a collaborative effort of 25 state and federal agencies with management or regulatory responsibilities for California’s San Francisco Bay-Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system. The CALFED Science Fellows Program pairs junior scientists with CALFED Program agency scientists and senior research mentors. Fellows work on collaborative data analysis and research projects relevant to ecosystem management and water supply reliability, including analyses of the immense monitoring database collected and maintained by the CALFED implementing agencies.


Restoration Ecologist/Biologist - LRAM Coordinator (ITAM). Seeking an innovative and responsible individual with excellent planning and communication skills to fill a position in the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program Office at the Army National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California. The successful candidate will oversee the Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance component of the ITAM Program. Restoration Project Manager - Fresno, CA. San Joaquin River Parkway & Conservation Trust. Position Open Until Filled. The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust is seeking a key individual to join its staff as Restoration Project Manager. This is a regular full-time position. The Restoration Project Manager is responsible for implementation of restoration and interpretive projects that further the mission of the Trust, with particular emphasis on the Jensen River Ranch Habitat Enhancement & Public Access Project. The Project Manager will oversee operations and maintenance of Parkway properties, and manage the Trust's Conservation Easement portfolio. Stewardship Manager - Rolling Hills Estates, California. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Position open until filled. The Stewardship Manager will be responsible for oversight of land stewardship activities and the implementation of restoration of sensitive lands and species at preserve properties on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This position reports to the Conservation Director. This is a full time, salaried, supervisory, exempt employee. Work hours are at least forty hours per week, flexible to accommodate evening meetings and weekend workdays. The Stewardship Manager collaborates with other Conservancy Directors and Project Managers as well on a variety of projects to fulfill the organization’s mission. The Manager will oversee the field and nursery staff in order to manage the nature preserves and conduct habitat restoration. Job Description: The Habitat Restoration Director develops strategies to ensure that 100,000 acres of San Francisco Bay wetland habitat will be restored by 2020, develops best practices and techniques to influence large-scale restoration plans and shares best practices with Bay restoration scientists and restoration managers. The Director raises funds to support Save The Bay's restoration program goals and manages high-level partnerships with government agencies and other key stakeholders.
